Everything You Need To Know About Hip Dips

Every now and then, a body positive hashtag sweeps over Instagram, filling our feeds with women embracing their stretch marks, cellulite, belly rolls and now: hip dips. No, it’s not the name of a new dance, but the rather cute name referring to the indentation of women’ hips.

Just like any other body positive trend, hip dips are completely normal and healthy and have a lot less to do with weight and more to do with the fact you’re born with a skeleton.

Still not sure what they are? Well, TRAIN for HER caught up with cosmetic surgeon at The Plastic Surgery Group, Mr. Mo Akhavani to get the lo-down on what hip dips are, whether they’re normal and IF you need to treat them.

What are hip dips?

Hip Dips, Trochanteric Depression or Violin Hip all refer to a completely normal anatomical inward curve that sits on each side of the hip just below the hip bone. This happens when one’s hip bone is located higher than his or her femur, causing fat and muscle to cave inward. On some individuals, a hip dip is more noticeable, whereas on others the hips are smoother.

How common are they?

Almost everyone has a degree of “hip dip”. It is just more pronounced in some individuals. Therefore, it is almost impossible to put on a number on this! It is more common in women due to the naturally wider position of the hip bones and a genetically different pattern of fat distribution to men.

How can you treat them and should you?

Although absolutely no treatment is needed for hip dips, some people prefer the smoother “hour-glass figure” look.  This can be achieved by either removing the fatty prominence above and below dips by liposuction, or by filling the dip with a filler.

This can be a natural filler like the patient’s own fat or a synthetic filler. Often a combination of liposuction and fat grafting is required. In some cases where there is a severe depression perhaps due to an injury, custom-made implants can be used.

Still not convinced? Here are some women who are rocking their hip dips and looking fantastic while doing it.
