Margot Robbie On Getting In Shape For Suicide Squad

The in-demand hollywood actress on getting in shape for her role in Suicide Squad.

Finding the fun

Growing up, I surfed and I danced, so I had a tiny bit of background knowledge of workouts, but not a lot.

Fluid motions

I did a lot of pilates, ballet-type workouts and different types of cardio. I was jogging, skipping, swimming and doing lots of jumping – I was like a jackrabbit. I used rebounders and did weighted ball work, too. It’s been tough, tough going for me as I’ve never been that much of a gym bunny.

Strong girl

There were some weighted moves as well. I did a lot of weighted ballet moves, with resistance pulleys and also ankle weights. It was very ballet and pilates-based, incorporating more reps, but then adding some extra motions to your usual pilates regimes.

Flat stomach fixer

I was doing a lot of ab work and toning. There was a lot of work on the pilates reformer, doing planks and different lifts. Then, for my legs and bum, I did a bit more heavier resistance and lower reps to work on building my muscle a tiny bit – that was the ankle weight stuff – as well as some ranges and motions on the pilates reformer.

Dietary allowances

Since I was doing so much cardio and training, I wasn’t really restricting my diet because I was burning so many calories every day. I was eating sensibly and needed the food for energy. You want to make sure you get the best out of the work you put in, but then I didn’t want to go crazy, so I ate what I wanted in moderation. I do like chips, burgers and trips to the pub though, so I wanted to balance everything out.

More to come?

I think I’ve only scratched the surface with Harley Quinn [her character in Suicide Squad]. She is like a bottomless pit of issues and fun. There’s so much I want to do with her – a dozen movies’ worth of things to explore… I’ve never felt that way about a character before. With films, I enjoy leaving the character behind and moving on to something else, but with Harley Quinn that isn’t the case. I’m very excited about what is coming next for the character and the universe.
