What Is Muscle Progression And How Can You Tally It?

Every month we ask our panel of experts their opinion on what’s hot in health and fitness. This month we ask: what is muscle progression and how can you tally it?

Noel Arevalo

Your strength should be progressing just as much as anything else. That’s a clear sign your muscles are adapting and growing.

I track training volume over time. Volume is sets x reps x weight, and to grow muscle, you want to slowly increase over time. Incremental increases in strength are a good indicator that you’re adding muscle.

Tally your improvements in the gym by taking note of your increase in strength each session, as well as your increased endurance.

Progress is the best indicator of any workout. If your goal is to get stronger, are you getting stronger with your lifts? If your goal is to burn fat, are your clothes fitting better? These are the questions you need to be asking yourself to figure out if you’re having good and effective workouts.

I judge my workout by how much I have “in my tank” when it’s complete. If I’m completely exhausted, I really worked hard and exhausted it. If I feel like I could do the workout all over again, that’s when I know I could have given it a much better effort.

The best predictor is having fun, having intensity, and trying my personal best. Soreness does not equal progress. Pushing yourself and implementing proper progressive overload is what makes progress.

The number one indicator of a good workout for me is if I make progress on all of my lifts, and am completely “in the zone” mentally without allowing other distractions to detract from my workout. A good workout is just as much mental as it is physical.
