Just like the seconds you wait for an important e-mail to download, Pilates-hold seconds seem to take far longer than normal seconds.
But those fragile moments of controlled agony do pay dividends. When young, obese women did just 90 minutes of the type of mat Pilates that you can do in your own home, they saw their blood pressure drop by up to six points and even culled a few body fat percentages, according to research in the American Journal of Hypertension.
This was achieved in just three, one-hour sessions across 12 weeks which increased cardiovascular health while reducing arterial stiffness without any change to their diet at all.
